Patients are eligible for hospice if they have serious illness or injury and they have reached the point they no longer wish to seek aggressive or curative treatment. The focus of hospice care is on comfort and supporting quality of life when treatments aimed at cure or extending life are no longer desirable. Hospice care is provided when a physician determines it is appropriate. We care for people of all ages and diagnoses who reside in Bonner or Boundary counties.

Anyone can refer a patient and should do so as soon as they believe the person could benefit from support in their home.  An early referral provides a terminally ill person and their family the greatest support and time to receive the full benefit of hospice care.

Our hospice teams offer patients choices, support, and comfort. Our team includes a Hospice Medical Director, Physician, nurse practitioners, registered nurses, social workers, chaplains, and volunteers who are available to respond to our patients’ needs. We work with each individual to make sure their wishes come first. Together the team helps each patient live their best possible quality of life surrounded and supported by loved ones, friends, and committed caregivers.

Registered Nurses visit patients regularly to assess your medical needs, communicate with your doctors, and implement treatment orders. They also provide your caregivers with training regarding patient daily care.

Medical Social Workers help patients and their loved ones with grief counseling and end-of-life planning. They also assist with financial issues and accessing other community resources.

Chaplains provide spiritual care as patients and their loved one’s process through meaning, purpose, and sustaining hope at this time of life. Chaplain services are offered to all patients regardless of their personal spiritual beliefs.

Nurse Aides assist with personal care needs, such as bathing, hair care, and other needs.

Volunteers provide companionship, support, and assist with respite care for the caregiver, may run errands, assist with various needs in the home, and more.

Therapists (Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy, and Speech Therapy) offer patients and their families support and training to best manage daily care needs.

Bereavement Counselors provide counseling for patients, their family and friends, and for any community member experiencing grief from the death of a loved one.

Prescription medications, medical equipment, and medical supplies related to the terminal illness are provided and are generally covered in full under the Hospice benefit.

Dietary Counseling is also available.

Inherent in hospice care is the ongoing education about caregiving, the disease process, and the options and interventions to help relieve pain and other discomforts.  Our focus is to provide the greatest support to our patients and their families to meet what is most important to them along their journey.

Bonner General Health Community Hospice is a nonprofit organization. We rely on BGH and members of the community for our funding. The funds we receive from individual and corporate donations provide much-needed services in our health network. These dollars all stay in Bonner and Boundary counties. Our volunteers provide direct client support, respite care for the caregivers, they provide companionship, practical support, bedside vigil assistance, clerical/administration support, bereavement, and more. Grief is the feeling of loss we experience physically and emotionally at the time someone close to us dies. It is often accompanied by a sense of shock or numbness.

Bereavement is the process of adjusting to life without our loved one. The process is different for everyone and may affect our thoughts and feelings for months or even years. Sometimes it can affect us physically in ways that are difficult to understand.
